Advancing Climate Justice Through Action

Advancing Climate Justice Through Action

From Global Commitments to Meaningful Results for Africa

The 31st Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP31) will take place in Antalya, Türkiye, from 9–20 November 2026. Guided by the principles of Dialogue, Consensus and Action, COP31 is positioning implementation at the centre of global climate efforts—turning existing commitments into measurable progress for people, economies and ecosystems.

The COP31 Action Agenda identifies ten priority themes: clean energy transition and electrification; zero waste and methane reduction; climate-resilient cities; green industrialisation; youth and education; food security; oceans and seas; dynamic and resilient health systems; Rio synergies; and the Climate Implementation Bridge. Climate finance, technology and capacity-building are cross-cutting enablers for delivering progress across these areas.

Putting Africa’s Climate Priorities at the Centre

For Africa, COP31 is an important opportunity to advance climate action that is equitable, adequately financed and responsive to the realities facing communities across the continent. Although African countries have contributed relatively little to historical global greenhouse gas emissions, many face disproportionate climate impacts, including droughts, floods, food insecurity, biodiversity loss and growing pressure on livelihoods.

A credible implementation agenda must therefore go beyond ambition. It must improve access to predictable and affordable climate finance, strengthen adaptation and resilience, address loss and damage, expand access to appropriate technologies, and support a just transition that creates opportunities for African communities, women and young people.

PACJA’s Climate Justice Focus

The Pan African Climate Justice Alliance (PACJA) works to amplify African civil society perspectives and promote climate policies grounded in equity, accountability and the needs of affected communities. In the lead-up to and during COP31, these priorities provide a framework for engaging governments, institutions and partners on climate finance, community-led adaptation, food systems, renewable energy, youth participation and a fair transition to climate-resilient development.

The message is clear: climate commitments must translate into accessible finance, practical solutions and tangible benefits for the people and communities most affected by climate change. Africa must be an active participant in shaping global climate decisions—not merely a recipient of their outcomes.

Explore the COP31 agenda and follow the global climate negotiations as Africa’s climate justice priorities take centre stage.
